Ashton Winger makes Dome debut with runner-up outing in prelim feature
Making his first appearance at the Gateway Dirt Nationals, Ashton Winger unloaded his Mathews Motorsports No. 12 machine at The Dome at America's Center (St. Louis, Mo.) on Thursday afternoon for his preliminary night.
Out of 66 Super Late Models, Winger laid down the third-quickest lap in his qualifying group before outrunning Jonathan Davenport in his heat race. In the $5,000-to-win prelim feature, Ashton started from the front-row and battled for the top spot with Mike Spatola but ultimately settled for a runner-up finish.
Locked into Saturday's $30,000-to-win finale, Winger started sixth in the 40-lap race and ran as high as second before engine woes forced him to pull in. He was scored 16th in the final running order.
