Ashton Winger scores fourth place finish in SAS opener at Smoky Mountain

Friday night saw Ashton Winger return to action at Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tenn.) behind the wheel of the Johnny Doan Plumbing No. 12 Late Model for the Southern All Star Series doubleheader. With 34 cars on hand for the King of the Mountain Championship, Ashton secured his spot into the opening night feature with the second fastest time in his qualifying group behind Ricky Weiss. With $3,000 on the line, Winger faded one spot in the 30-lap affair to finish fourth behind Dale McDowell, Ricky Weiss, and Sam Seawright with Tommy Kerr coming in fifth. (Michael Moats photo)

1On Saturday evening, Winger timed in third fastest in his time trial group before picking up an 8-lap heat race victory. Starting on the pole for the $7,000-to-win finale, Ashton surrendered the top spot to Dale McDowell early in the race but reeled in the leader near the halfway point. Attempting to throw a slider on McDowell after a restart, Winger made hard contact with the wall that forced him pitside for the remainder of the evening on lap 24.
